A Heritage Tour of Wairarapa Moana

Join us on a bus tour around Wairarapa Moana, exploring key sites of importance to mana whenua.

Lake Wairarapa is a place where people traditionally gathered. They left footprints or evidence and we found them through archaeology. Come and see how Wairarapa Moana cared for the basic needs of its people.

Listen to decades of working in the soil that found ancient evidence of ordinary activities from extraordinary lives. Piece together the archaeology that shows the cultural lives, the spiritual hopes and the social activities of these New Zealanders. Find Wairarapa's heritage, an ancient finger print.

Nau mai, haere mai ki te ao o tatou tipuna. Welcome to the world of our ancestors.

Sites and areas of significance to Māori carry deep levels of meaning and associations for tangata whenua. They provide a tangible connection to their whenua (land), significant historical events, and urupā. Even where such sites no longer exist physically, their memory remains an important part of the cultural landscape.
