Join the Friends of Karori Cemetery for tours covering different aspects of the wonderful landscape and the amazing stories of those buried at this historic location.

Established in 1891, Karori Cemetery is New Zealand’s second-largest burial ground, covering nearly 40 hectares. It is the final resting place of more than 85,000 people. Today, it is Wellington’s largest heritage site and a peaceful place to visit.

Health & Safety

Please dress for the conditions. While we do our best to guide you on a safe route, the ground can be wet and slippery. Some walks require a moderate degree of fitness and are not suited for those with limited mobility. Please read the tour descriptions.

Friends of Karori Cemetery

The Friends of Karori Cemetery Inc was formed in early 2020 The Friends have a close working relationship with the Cemetery management team, and with the WCC. The WCC aspire to progressively develop the heritage aspects of the Cemetery, and one of the Friend’s main objectives is to support and assist the WCC achieve this. The Friends are a wholly volunteer–based organisation with an elected Committee which provides leadership and governance. We support the preservation, protection and enhancement of the heritage, recreational and ecological aspects of Karori Cemetery, we promote public interest in the Cemetery and support and undertake research into the history of the Cemetery and those interred in it.
