George Pain: Grocer, Gentleman, Generous Benefactor

From the Mate Higginson Collection: George Pain, a keen judge of horses, in his gig circa 1900

George Pain (1846-1937) merchant, farmer, business owner and philanthropist comes to life to tell us his story in his own words.

An animation of George Pain is the centrepiece of an exhibition recognising his significant contribution to the early growth of Martinborough. His name lives on in the Pain and Kershaw Supermarket but the man himself has become a footnote to history. This exhibition gives him the place he deserves in local history.

Martinborough Museum Trust

The museum is managed by a Charitable Trust and staffed by volunteers. Since it opened in 1978 it has been collecting, conserving and promoting local heritage. The collections are housed in charming 1894 heritage-listed building which was originally the town library. It was designed by Charles Natusch, a prominent architect in the region. The museum rooms are furnished in vintage style and include period clothing, furnishings and other artefacts. There is also an exhibition area with an interesting mix of heritage items, Maori taonga and information displays.
