'History and Hoops"! At the Wellington Croquet club Newtown.

Join Claire Nolan and Matthew Spooner for 'History and hoops'. A history talk and demonstration of croquet, and a chance to have a hit.

Claire Nolan will give an introduction covering the links to wider Newtown Heritage.

Matthew Spooner will talk about the Croquet Club history from its opening in 1919. Then there will be an opportunity to try and put the balls through the hoops, with a demonstration and a game.

Health & Safety

From the carpark at the top on Alexandra road its a sloping walk down to the Croquet Club. It may be slippery on the final slope down.

Appropriate flat shoes are recommended. Trip hazards are found on the fields mostly the hoops. Event is reliant on a reasonable weather day.

Alternative parking may be found on Coromandel Street and a shorter walk through a path off Seddon street.

Claire Nolan has been involved in Character and Heritage submissions for the District plan. She is a Heritage Advocate, writing for Scoop news, and is again hosting the old Town Newtown tour in 2025. She has lived in Newtown for thirty years. Matthew Spooner is a Past President of the Wellington Croquet club in Newtown.
