Plaque marking the entrance to the Lilburn House
Visit the historic modernist cottage (and garden) that was home to Douglas Lilburn (1915-2001), the father of classical composition in Aotearoa.
The Lilburn House has a Category 1 Heritage listing, because it is an excellent example of modernist domestic architecture, and because it was the home of the illustrious New Zealand composer, Douglas Lilburn. These days, it is offered each year to a new, Composer-in-Residence — currently Penelope Axtens.
The Open Day offers a rare opportunity to visit the house and enjoy the garden. There will be short performances at 2.30 pm and 3.30 pm
Health & Safety
The approach to the front gate at 22 Ascot St from the downhill (Eastern) side is quite steep. For a wheelchair user, there are a few bumps getting through the front gate and three small steps into the house.
