Makara Churches and Historic Cottage Tour

Can we use the banner that was on our application last year

The Makara Churches St Matthias and St Patricks date back to the 1800's. Monk Cottage built in 1867 is used as a local musuem for the area.

The churches and cottage will be open over one weekend from 10am till 3pm for people to visit. They are all within walking distance of each other.

Local people will be on site to talk to visitors. The cottage has information about early settlement of the area. St Patricks church has beautiful stained glass windows dedicated to early settlers. St Matthias has a graveyard where the early settlers are buried.

Health & Safety

No particular health and safety issues apart from possibly someone tripping on an entry step. None of the buildings have difficult entryways, only 2 or 3 steps to get inside.

The road outside is quite busy at weekends so care must be taken getting in and out of cars if parked outside the grounds. There is plenty of parking inside the venue area off the road.

Makara Community Centre Association Inc

The Makara Community Assn is a local group responsible for the Community Hall, St Patricks Historic Church and Monk Cottage, a local small museum that is one of the original family homes in the area settled in 1848. Our tour also includes the Anglican Church, St Matthias and the graveyard in its grounds. This graveyard has many graves of the original settlers in the Makara area. St Patricks church has several beautiful stained glass windows dedicated to early Makara families. The person responsible for organising the event is Anne Rose and we have done this now for two years previously. We do it over one weekend when the 3 buildings are open from 10 am till 3pm on the Saturday and Sunday. Local people are on site to talk to visitors. There is no charge for entry but a donation is welcome
