Two photographs of churches in Makara

Makara Historic Churches Open Day

Makara Churches Open Days

The two churches are: St Patricks which was built in 1873, and St Matthias which was built in 1921 to replace an older church built in 1867.

Visitors to the churches will be able to see the beautiful stain glass windows in St Patricks church. These were designed and made by a local artist Jenni Lean. They depict the history of the local area and its associated families.

St Matthias was designed by a well-known church architect F.de J Clere who was responsible for designing many Anglican churches in New Zealand.

Local people will be at the churches to talk to visitors and answer questions.

Health & Safety

St Matthias has 3 steps to navigate with a double handrail to assist people to walk up the steps. St Patricks has only one step into the foyer and another into the church itself.

There is off road parking for St Patricks and side road parking for St Matthias. Access also can be achieved up a driveway to the front of St Matthias for less able people. Makara Rd itself is quite busy so care must be taken when parking and exiting cars.

Location
St Patricks Church 312/376 Makara Rd Makara Village. St Matthias is directly opposite across the road.
