Te Motu Kairangi / The Miramar Peninsula, its historical and ecological features

Te Motu Kairangi / Miramar Peninsula has many sites of historical significance, together with varied and regenerating biodiversity.

The route of walk will take in Miramar Community Garden (on site of former Wellington Prison garden); site of former prison officers' training building, women's reformatory building and a filming location; ten former munitions bunkers; Shelly Bay - works for Peter Jackson & Fran Walsh to repair the landscape; (possible sojourn at Chocolate Fish Café); walk south beside Shelly Bay Rd; climb Piki ki Maupuia Walkway through native bush in Carter Park to Maupuia and no. 24 bus route.

Travel from northern suburbs: Catch No. 24 Miramar Heights bus which leaves Johnsonville - Stop B 9.45 a.m., Broadmeadows - Rajkot Tce 9.48 a.m., Khandallah village - Stop B 9.57a.m., Wellington Station - Stop A 10.14 a.m., Courtenay Place - Stop C 10.26 a.m., Greta Point, Evans Bay Pde - 10.35 a.m., Kilbirnie - Stop A 10.39 a.m., Mt Crawford - 10.49 a.m.

Non-bus travellers: meet 11am opposite Wellington (Mt Crawford) Prison gate.
