Mount Street Cemetery Open Day

Mount Street Cemetery is Wellingtons first Catholic cemetery. It has a strong historical connection to early Wellington and is a quiet sanctuary in the city.

Friends of the Mount Street Cemetery will be hosting an open day for people to visit and experience the cemetery. They will be on hand to describe the history of the cemetery, its connections to early settlers and the Catholic community in Wellington, and conservation efforts. A leisurely stroll around the cemetery takes about 1 hour.

Health & Safety

Visitors are asked to respect the cemetery and keep to paths and tracks. They are advised to look where placing feet so as to avoid tripping over. Please keep away from the steep bank on the boundary with McKenzie Terrace. Please wear good shoes and dress for the weather.

The Friends of Mount Street Cemetery is group established under the Catholic Archdiocese of Wellington in 2010 to lead activities to restore the burial sites in this historic and sacred ground; to establish full records; and to conserve the landscape of the Cemetery as an amenity for all.
