Newtown Adventure Playground 1974: Photographs by John McWilliam

Photograph of local children playing in a ramshackle DIY adventure playground in a disused timber yard on the corner of Daniel and Constable Streets.

The Wellington City Council owned this land and it was destined for council housing (now Te Ara Hou flats). When a fire destroyed most of the buildings on the site the community pitched in and after a huge clearing operation, the Adventure Playground was created.

The framed photographs in this exhibition (in three different sizes) are available to purchase as well as an exhibition booklet with John’s photographs and the story of the playground.
