Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Wallpaper Collection is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere and treasure trove of social and design history.
We invite you to journey through the evolutions of interior design in Aotearoa New Zealand, told through the fascinating medium of wallpaper.
This exhibition takes you on a diverse exploration of creative expression during one of the most transformative periods in global history.
Experience the early 20th century when European decorative arts overflowed with whimsical ornamentation, and vibrant floral patterns pair with exotic birds to showcase the artistic spirit of the time. Art Nouveau dominates with elaborate patterns and exotic themes.
Progressing through the interwar years, bold tones give way to muted, creamy colours in response to the economic challenges of the time, perfectly embraced by the abstract designs of the Art Deco movement. The latest samples mirror the desire for clean lines and functionality, influenced by the rise of mid-century modernism. They were quickly followed by the bold psychedelic patterns of the 1960’s and 1970’s, reflecting the influence of pop culture and the vibrant and expressive nature of the time.
In Aotearoa New Zealand, our homes reflected shifting attitudes toward the country’s identity on the global stage.
The 1960’s and 1970’s ushered in a new era of art and design, as a fresh wave of locally training designers and creatives embraced influences closer to home, stepping away from the Eurocentric traditions that dominated to date.
