Old High Court Open Evening

The open evening at the Wellington Old High Court provides a unique opportunity to walk through the meticulously restored Category 1 Heritage Building.

Opened in 1881, the Old High Court in Wellington was the scene of some of the most significant court cases in the country.

The open evening will give visitors the chance to explore this impressive building, guided by knowledgeable staff from the Office of the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court who will be on hand to talk about the courts, historic cases, previous chief justices, and more, with some information displays. Visitors will also have the option to descend into the cells.

Health & Safety

The descent to the cells is via steep and narrow stairs, there is a handrail for safety. Visiting the cells is an optional activity, available to those who feel comfortable doing so.

The Communications and Engagement Team in the Office of the Chief Justice is responsible for a number of initiatives to assist public understanding of the role of the judiciary and the work of the courts. This includes operating the tours programme at the Supreme Court and Old High Court complex.
