Ōtaki Museum Talk - Stories & Expert Insights into Kāpiti's Heritage

Hear from four heritage experts about the stories, archaeology, and research into the history of the Kāpiti Coast.

Stories about the past emerge into the present in a variety of ways and through a range of experiences. They can, for example, be shared between generations over many years, exposed through archaeological explorations, or discovered through research and reflection. The stories in this event draw on each of these particular ways to provide insights into Kāpiti’s past. The storytellers are: • Mary O’Keeffe, who was recently the Mackays to Peka Peka (M2PP) Expressway archaeologist, will talk about ‘Living on the coast – the archaeology of the Kāpiti Coast’ • Dr Bruce McFadgen, is a registered Land Surveyor, and an archaeologist with more than 45 years' field experience. His topic will be, ‘What archaeology tells us about the dangers of living on the Kāpiti- Manawatū Coast’ • Anthony Dreaver, a well-known and published local historian, will give a presentation entitled ‘Death of a mariner: Coastal shipping from the Port of Waikanae’ • Rupene Waaka(Ngāti Raukawa) has as his topic, ‘Ōtaki history by Ōtaki born’ Everyone attending the event is, on completion of the presentations, invited to join the hosts for afternoon tea.
