Railway station, cream with red accents, "Paekākāriki" written on side

Paekākāriki Station Museum

The museum has displays of Ngāti Haumia heritage, early settlers, the US Marines who ‘occupied’ the village in WWII, and local railway history.

The station was built in 1909, replacing the station built around 1886 for the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company’s line between Wellington and Longburn. The plan for the building is based on a design of work of George Alexander Troup (1863-1941), chief architect of New Zealand Railways, and later Mayor of Wellington (1927-1931).

During WWII, fifteen thousand U.S. Marines disembarked at the station for camps situated at Whareroa Farm, Queen Elizabeth Park and north Paekākāriki.

This museum is also the starting point for the Paekākāriki History Walk, the Arts Walk, and the Escarpment Trail.
