Paekākāriki Station Museum celebrates our local heritage, including railway history, Tangata Whenua, early settlers and US Marines stationed during World War Two.
At Labour Weekend, we have a feature on the rainbow history of Paekākāriki, coinciding with Paekākāriki Pride weekend. Come to celebrate local history and the rainbow communities that have shaped the Paekākāriki of today. The station was built in 1909, replacing the station built around 1886 for the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company’s line between Wellington and Longburn. The plan for the building is based on a design of work of George Alexander Troup (1863-1941), chief architect of New Zealand Railways, and later Mayor of Wellington (1927-1931). During WWII, fifteen thousand U.S. Marines disembarked at the station for camps situated at Whareroa Farm, Queen Elizabeth Park and north Paekākāriki. This museum is also the starting point for the Paekākāriki History Walk, the Arts Walk, and the Escarpment Trail.
