A creative visual history of Petone Wharf through historic and modern media. An exhibition of the evolution of the Wharf from gritty past to present icon.
Petone Wharf was built by Wellington Harbour Board in 1909, following the demolition of an earlier wharf. It has seen the rise and decline of national and local industries, had close links with Matiu/Somes Island, and has always been a place where locals could go to fish, relax and enjoy being out over the sea.
As well as being a much loved and used community treasure, Petone’s historic wharf has been and still is a popular subject for photographers and a wonderful inspiration for artists. To coincide with heritage month, Petone’s seaside art and gift gallery, Artspace Gallery, is hosting an exhibition of photographs, art and prints of the Wharf .
Considered by many as an essential part of what makes Petone the great place it is, a major community effort recently overturned the local council’s intention to demolish it. As well as historic photographs and other information, the exhibition will also include a colourful display of photographs of the community walk which aimed to help save it.
