Come and see the incredible locomotives and rail carriages that the Steam Incorporated members are working on!
The Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company built the first engine shed on the site in 1886 to serve the need to change locomotives on the Wellington-Manawatu line required for the Paekākāriki Hill and grades south into Wellington.
The large freight shed was originally built for the US Marines during WWII. In the 1950s it became the Rail Air freight depot for Paraparaumu Airport – moving freight to Blenheim prior to the rail ferries being introduced.
Entry and exit to the depot is via the northbound lane of SH59 only. Free car parking is available clear of the highway at the north end of the old Rail Air Shed.
Steam Incorporated also owns and operates heritage diesel locomotives, both on the main line and for shunting duties around the depot at Paekākāriki. Main line rail tours are also run; these are regularly advertised to the public.
