Floor Talk - Selections from the Field Collection

Frances Hodgkins, The Fortune Teller

Pamela Gerrish Nunn will talk about the artworks in the 'Selections from the Field Collection' exhibition.

Toi MAHARA is the home of the Field Collection, 44 works, 24 of them paintings by Frances Hodgkins (1869–1947), considered New Zealand’s most significant expatriate artist. It is the largest collection of Hodgkins’ work outside Te Papa Tongarewa and city collections in Dunedin, Auckland and Christchurch.

This exhibition will be the first showing of the works of the Field Collection in the newly redeveloped Toi MAHARA gallery.

In this talk, Pamela Gerrish Nunn will discuss the artworks, their relevance to the exhibition, and their place in the collection.

Dr Pamela Gerrish Nunn, formerly professor of art history at the University of Canterbury, is well known internationally as a specialist on women artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries. She has published articles and given conference papers on Frances Hodgkins, curated an exhibition of Hodgkins' works at the NZ Portrait Gallery and contributed to several Toi MAHARA exhibitions.

Toi MAHARA

Contemporary public art gallery Toi MAHARA is the district gallery for the Kāpiti Coast. The gallery helps form a vibrant and colourful heart for the district. There are four exhibition spaces showcasing local creativity, toi Māori, historical taonga, and work by nationally significant artists. The exhibition programme balances quality local and national content, works in partnership with local iwi, and reflects the diversity of the Kāpiti arts community. Toi MAHARA is also the home of The Field Collection, comprising 44 works, including 24 paintings by Frances Hodgkins. It is the largest collection of Hodgkins’ work in public ownership outside Te Papa and Auckland and Dunedin public art galleries. The Field Collection is available to view by appointment.
