Inside of a wooden church with pews and stained glass windows

The Founding Families of St. Joseph's Pāuatahanui

St Joseph's interior

Hear the stories, with accompanying photos and maps, which bring to life the families who founded this beautiful church 147 years ago.

Brian Murphy, a descendant of the Murphy family who built St. Joseph's church, will lead this talk. A small community of closely-linked families, with many coming from Roscommon in Ireland, established farms at Pāuatahanui and donated funds to build this timber Victorian-Gothic church.

Brian will relate stories which lie behind the graves and unique windows of St. Joseph's.
