The SS Ventnor Story and sinking in 1902

Photo of Lynette Shum

Hundreds of Chinese bodies being repatriated to China, sank with the SS Ventnor off the Hokianga Coast in 1902. Their recovery story is told.

This presentation by Chinese Oral Historian Lynette Shum, traces the story of the SS Ventnor, its sinking and recovery of bodies by local iwi and the partnership that has unfolded over the years between the New Zealand Chinese Association and iwi in the north of New Zealand.

These were early Chinese settlers in New Zealand, many of whom worked in the goldfields in Central Otago.
