The U.S. Marine Corps in Masterton

A tour of the Solway Showground with a talk about the history of the USMC in Masterton 1942-43.

In February 1943, a battalion of the United States Marine Corps arrived in Masterton and camped at the Solway Showgrounds. Hear their stories and see where they camped and lived in a showground that has changed very little since their stay.

Health & Safety

The tour takes you through the showgrounds that, while flat, are grass. Health and safety briefing to be given at start of tour.

Please wear good shoes and dress for the weather. The tour may be cancelled in bad weather.

The Wairarapa Archive is a community and council archive in Masterton. We have two kilometres of occupied shelving and approximately two million images. We are located at 3 Albert Street and are open to the public 1-5 Mon-Fri. We are a team of three and engage in digitisation, conservation and various outreach projects including talks and publications promoting local heritage.
