The Wairarapa Journey - Wairarapa Moana Bus Tour

Wairarapa Moana Site of Significance Tour

Join this bus tour, with lunch included, to discover the Wairarapa Moana Journey through 15 stops sharing the stories of this landmark.

The heritage of place will be told at places to reveal significance. A cultural perspective of the 1855 earthquake brings a Wairarapa worldview. An environmental perspective of the flooding brings a Wairarapa view of land. An ecological perspective of plants brings a traditional view from gardening tribes.

The interaction between our nation’s capital and Wairarapa has tested our traditional leadership, but there is a heritage story here too. The heritage of the Wairarapa Character can grow again.

A timeline for this event, including a list of the stops the bus will take, can be found in this PDF.

Tangata whenua are people shaped by the land. The heritage of Wairarapa’s tangata whenua is passed down by each generation in whakapapa korero, or storied genealogy, that often features Wairarapa Moana. The collection of lakes, estuaries and wetlands are echoes heard through the ages. From this heritage comes themes that are associated with Wairarapa Moana like rongo or peace and mahinga kai, or food gathering place. Wairarapa Moana is a freshwater eye and the saltwater eye is Wellington Harbour.
