Walk the Walk Wellington Te Whanganui-a-Tara

Walk the Walk Wellington Te Whanganui-a-Tara is a guided walking tour of the city's fashion heritage locations - 19th century draperies to 21 century designers.

This project will be the latest in the New Zealand Fashion Museum (NZFM) walking tour series. After eight years of successful walking tours around Auckland city streets, we are very excited to take the concept to cities around Aotearoa New Zealand. First up is Te Whanganui-a-Tara.

Walk the Walk: Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington is a guided walking tour of 15-20 locations that were once, and in many cases still are, home to fashion businesses. These range from small dressmakers and tailors to large department stores and clothing manufacturers and the tour aims to look beyond the contemporary facade to a building’s fascinating heritage story. NZFM walking tours are designed to be flexible. Previous tours have been tailored to accompany New Zealand Fashion Week, the ‘Mary Quant: Fashion Revolutionary’ exhibition at Auckland Art Gallery, and the ‘That’s So Last Century’ exhibition at Auckland Central Library. Tours have also been delivered for tertiary-level fashion students eager to learn about local fashion history and those who paved the way for them.

New Zealand Fashion Museum

Established in 2010 by Doris de Pont, the New Zealand Fashion Museum records and shares the stories of the people, objects and images that have contributed to the development of Aotearoa's unique fashion identity. It makes them visible and accessible to a broad audience through pop-up exhibitions and events around New Zealand, including walking tours of fashion heritage sites.
