Stone headstone in a graveyard

Wonderful Wahine: Women in the Cemetery

Maori burials in the Cemetery

History has often neglected women's lives, so come and hear many different stories that will entertain you about amazing women from our early history.

Entertaining stories of women – settlers and Māori – in Wellington history. Wives, daughters, mothers, housewives: an artist, a nurse, a song-writer, landladies, shopkeepers and a wahine who signed the Treaty of Waitangi.

Health & Safety

Keep to the paths and always follow the directions of your tour guide. There are many old headstones and fragile railings in the Cemetery. Wear sturdy shoes and be careful.

The Wonderful Wahine tour starts and finishes in the lower Cemetery, using the little Museum near 26 Bolton Street as the meeting place. (Other tours may be different so please check.)

Please wear good shoes and dress for the weather. The tour may be cancelled in bad weather.
