Come and hear historian Nigel Murphy talk about Chinese settlement and influence through business and other community activities in the life of Hutt City.
Nigel has dedicated over four decades to researching Chinese New Zealander’s social, cultural and political lives including their historical struggles with government policies. He is a foremost expert on the history of the Chinese Poll tax in New Zealand and his research papers were foundational to the official government apology in 2002. Nigel spoke in the Hutt during last year’s Wellington Heritage Festival on Chinese settlement and business in the Hutt and such was the interest in his address at that time, the Festival organisers are pleased to have Nigel back for the 2026 Festival. Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga is supporting the New Zealand Chinese Association, Wellington Branch, with this event for the Wellington Heritage Festival.
