An opportunity to visit four historic houses in Thorndon that have been home to prominent New Zealand (and French) artists.

Enjoy a walk through historic Thorndon between Katherine Mansfield House & Garden (25 Tinakori Road), the Randell Cottage (14 St Mary Street), the Lilburn House (22 Ascot St) and the garden at the Rita Angus Cottage (194a Sydney Street West).

All of these will be holding open days (separately listed) with activities including talks, readings and sketching in the garden. Pick up a map at any of the four houses to guide your stroll, perhaps stopping at a café on Tinakori Road for fuel along the way!

Health & Safety

There is flat access to the garden at Katherine Mansfield House & Garden but entry to the house is by three steps and there is an internal staircase. For more information about physical access at the house, please visit our website. The approach to the front gate at 22 Ascot St from the downhill (Eastern) side is quite steep. For a wheelchair user, there are a few bumps getting through the front gate and three small steps into the house.

Please wear good shoes and dress for the weather. The tour may be cancelled in bad weather.

Lilburn Residence Trust

The Lilburn Residence Trust Incorporated owns and manages the Lilburn House, 22 Ascot St, Thorndon, as a residency for composers (normally appointed annually in conjunction with the New Zealand School of Music). The house itself is a Category 1 Heritage listed building, partly because of its historical importance musically, and because it is a fine example of modernist domestic architecture.
