Peter Campbell, Kapiti Island, New Zealand, undated.
View paintings and drawings by three artists who left New Zealand to make a name for themselves overseas.
It is not surprising given New Zealand’s isolation that from the late 19th century onwards, many artists went abroad. They went to study, to encounter art both old and new at first hand and to participate in a wider and more varied cultural world. Although most returned to New Zealand, some to teach and pass on what they had learned, others stayed away and made their lives as artists elsewhere.
This exhibition looks at three such expatriate artists whose work is represented in Toi MAHARA’s collection — Frances Hodgkins, Peter Campbell and Graham Percy.
