Friends of Karori Cemetery: Hangman's Noose

In total, 85 people have been executed in New Zealand. 11 are buried in Karori Cemetery.  This walking tour will visit some of their graves.

In total, 85 people have been executed for crime in New Zealand with the first in 1842 and the last in 1957. Seventeen of those men were executed in Wellington and 11 are buried in Karori Cemetery. This walking tour will visit some of their graves to account their crimes, trials and convictions. It will also visit the plots of some of the victims.

Health & Safety

This tour is suitable for people with moderate fitness. The route mostly follows paved surfaces but there are some areas of unevenness. Surefootedness is required. During the winter months the ground can become slippery in places so good footwear is also required. This tour involves approximately 2.5km of walking, with some slow paced but uphill stints. The tour contains a number of adult themes and some graphic descriptions and so is not suitable for everyone.

Please wear good shoes and dress for the weather. The tour may be cancelled in bad weather.

Friends of Karori Cemetery

We are a group of volunteers who seek to promote public interest in the Cemetery which is the second largest in New Zealand covering 100 acres. Our purpose is to advocate for and develop the heritage and ecological values of Karori Cemetery, and to assist with grave/plot restoration. Our purposes are: -To support the preservation, protection and enhancement of the heritage, recreational and ecological aspects of the Karori Cemetery. -To advise and assist the WCC in its efforts to achieve this. -To promote public interest in the Cemetery. -To support and undertake research into the history of the Cemetery and those interred in it.
