Historic Petone Walking Tour
Petone is one of New Zealand's oldest European settlements. Come for a walk around central Petone with people who are passionate about its history.
The foreword to Susan Butterworth's 1988 book - "Petone - A History" says "Petone is a colourful place, stamped with the mark of sturdy independence... The years that have gone before have contributed to its sense of identity as a distinctive community". Those years have also left their trace in the places and buildings of central Petone. The session will cover themes of Petone's early settlement, industrialisation, and the history and development of its historic centre. You will see some of Petone's remaining historic buildings and learn about their past and present uses. Each tour is limited to 20 people.
Note: The Community House at 6 Britannia Street, one of Petone's listed historic buildings, will be open from 1pm before each tour. People are welcome to have a look around and a Petone Historic Society guide will be on hand to answer questions about the building and its history.
Health & Safety
The walk involves some uneven footpaths and uncontrolled road crossings. Safety advice will be given at the start of the walks.
Please wear good shoes and dress for the weather. The tour may be cancelled in bad weather.
