Walk the Kumutoto Stream from the waterfront to the remaining above ground section of stream in Kelburn and learn the history of freshwater in Pōneke/Wellington
Go to www.kumutoto.nz, pop your headphones in, and we’ll lead you on a guided walking tour of the Kumutoto Awa from the mouth to the above-ground section in Kumutoto Forest. You’ll learn about the history of Kumutoto from pre-human settlement, the arrival of tangata whenua, the arrival of the New Zealand Company to the present day and the impact of these changes on fresh waterways in our city.
Health & Safety
This walking tour will take approximately 1 hour. It starts at the waterfront and finishes in Kelburn. The route taken involves walking uphill and up and down steps. Part of the walk will be through city streets. Please take care when crossing roads while wearing headphones. Turn off noise-cancelling functions. Part of the walk will be through the forest on uneven ground that could be slippery. Please wear comfortable shoes with strong grip. Dress for the weather and bring a drink bottle. Unfortunately, Kumutoto is polluted so the water isn't safe to drink. Wash your hands afterwards if you put them in the water.
