Makara's Historic Buildings

Historic churches featuring beautiful stained glass windows, and an early settlers graveyard. Our local museum has stories to tell about our early settlement.

When you visit our churches, graveyard and museum you will be greeted by a local person, whom you can chat to. It is an opportunity to see an area that was settled early in Wellington and was farmed in the early 1800's. You can also drive further on down to the beach and go for a walk along the rugged coastline or drive up Opau Road to the wind turbines and site of the old radio station, from WWII.

Health & Safety

There is very little at our event that could be a health and safety issue. There is plenty of parking in the Community Centre grounds. There is a busy road going past the venues so children need to be supervised. All our venues are on one level so no stairs to cause an issue. Wheelchairs can access the museum and St Pats Church up a couple of steps but access to St Matthias is up about 4 steps so more difficult for access.

Makara Community Centre Association Inc

The event is being held at two Historic Churches and a local museum in Makara Wellington. The churches are St Patrick's, St Matthias and the museum is in Monk Cottage run by locals. All are in close proximity to each other. Both the churches have Historic Places status and the cottage was built in 1886 by one of the original settlers in the area. It has been moved to its present site, repaired and now houses information about the local area and its people. St Pats has been deconsecrated and is used for a variety of events such as weddings. St Matthias, an Anglican Church, is still holding services on a regular basis. The graveyard in its grounds has many old families buried there and is of interest historically.
