Ode to Te Rauparaha

Presented by Te Rūnanga O Toa Rangatira and Te Rākau Hua o Te Wao Tapu, Ode to Te Rauparaha is a performance about the eponymous ancestor Te Rauparaha of the Ngāti Toa Rangatira nation.

A man whose leadership of his people had significant impacts on Aotearoa. The performance is by esteemed actor Jim Moriarty, kapa haka and reo Māori expert Ihaia Ropata of Ngāti Toa and features the percussive talents of Michael Barker.

The three performers bring together spoken word, moteatea and music as a lament to Te Rauparaha and the region of Te Ūpoko o te Ika.

Bookings are required for the Saturday 4th November sessions at Ūpane, Porirua, but are optional for the Saturday 28th October sessions at Te Papa Tongarewa.

Koha are welcome and support Te Rākau and Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira to present this event.

Te Rākau Hua o Te Wao Tapu

Te Rākau Hua o Te Wao Tapu is Aotearoa New Zealand’s longest surviving independent Māori theatre company established in 1989. We are guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Today, Te Rākau is led by director Jim Moriarty and writer Helen Pearse-Otene. Te Rākau use Theatre Marae to create theatre, run workshops and build health within our communities. Te Rākau's Theatre Marae is a fusion of therapeutic models, ngā mahi a Rēhia (Māori games and past times), and Western political theatre delivered in a kaupapa Māori environment. We have worked in schools, prisons, Marae, urban and rural communities, and youth justice residencies across Aotearoa, using Theatre Marae as a tool for change.
