Pencarrow Lighthouse Open Day

Walk or Ride to the lovely, lonely landmark of the 1859 lighthouse on Wellington Harbour’s wind blasted Pencarrow Head.

A rare opportunity to look inside the lighthouse and talk with experts about its histories and stories whilst admiring the stunning views of the Parangarahu Lakes and the Sea of Raukawa.

Reaching Pencarrow and the Parangarahu area is half the fun. From downtown Wellington, you can drive, catch a bus or take the Days Bay ferry and make your way to Eastbourne, where the road ends.

Your options thereafter are to walk – about four hours return – or hire a bike (we recommend the e-bike option for beginners) from Wildfinder in Eastbourne. The coastal track is wide, flat and gravelled. To get up the hill to the lighthouse you can take a narrow walking track or continue around the coast to the gate and take a four-wheel drive track.

Health & Safety

Unfortunately, due to its remote location Pencarrow Lighthouse is not easily accessible to those with reduced mobility. Visitors wishing to climb the steep interior steps do so at their own risk. There will be staff on hand to advise of a safe number of visitors into the lighthouse at any one time. For your safety, please comply with staff instruction relating to the site.

Please remember Pencarrow is at an exposed location and the weather can be unpredictable. Dress appropriately and bring food and water.
