Philosophy House open day

Practical Philosophy and Mediation invite you to visit our beautiful 112 year old building to learn about its history and how it is used today.

Philosophy house is a well-known landmark in Aro Valley which is well frequented by our students but is not generally open to the wider community.

We are opening as part of the Heritage Festival for one day and will be offering tours around the building throughout the day. We will also have a number of short talks about practical philosophy and the meditation. See website and facebook page for more details.

Health & Safety

We take health and safety seriously and do everything we can to keep visitors safe. We do ask all visitors to use your common sense especially when climbing the steps to the front door and when walking on the uneven surface on the outside path. If you have any health or safety concerns when visiting please mention them to one of our hosts. The majority of the building has been earthquake strengthened to 64% of the Councils requirements (37% required).

Wellington School of Philosophy & Meditation

Practical Philosophy and meditation is a charitable non-profit organisation which has offered practical philosophy courses in Wellington since 1956. Philosophy House, our centre in Aro Valley, was built in 1913 by the Salvation Army and has been our home since 1984. The building has undergone extensive earthquake strengthening over the last 8 years and the exterior is being painted to make is usable for decades to come. Our building boasts beautiful classrooms as well as dining and residential facilities. Inspired by a universal philosophy, we are guided by the great teachings of the world including Advaita, Plato & Socrates, Sufi and the Buddha. Practical philosophy students have been practising the awareness exercise and mantra-based meditation for over 60 years.
