Robert Orr Historic Homestead Open Day

Come and experience one of Lower Hutt’s hidden heritage treasures at our upcoming Open Day! This 19th-century two-storey Italianate villa was designed by Charles Petrie for Robert Orr and built by Stephen Strand between 1885 and 1887. Constructed from native timbers—totara, rimu and matai—the house features a symmetrical design with two square bay windows flanking the main entrance. The once 17-acre estate became a thriving market garden employing up to 40 people, with most of the property then being subdivided in the 1960s. Still a cherished family home, the villa is tucked away from the street and surrounded by beautiful historic gardens. During the Open Day, visitors are welcome to explore the home and grounds at their own pace with a self-guided visit. It’s the perfect opportunity to relax, discover, and connect with Lower Hutt’s rich past.
