Red diesel locomotive and black steam locomotive emerging from a red storage building

Steam Incorporated

Come and see the incredible locomotives and rail carriages that the Steam Incorporated members are working on!

The Engine Shed is usually open Monday to Saturday with the main work days being Saturdays and Thursdays. At these times work is being done by members, but visitors are welcome to look around the site. The exception is Sunday 29th October and Sunday 5th November when the depot will be closed and no access to the site on that day.

Free car parking is available clear of the highway at the north end of the old Rail Air Shed.

Steam Incorporated also owns and operates heritage diesel locomotives, both on the main line and for shunting duties around the depot at Paekākāriki.

Main line rail tours are also run; these are regularly advertised to the public.

Steam Incorporated

Steam Incorporated is a leading operator of heritage rail excursions on the KiwiRail network in New Zealand. Departures are usually monthly with a range of day trips on offer. The society was formed back in 1972 as the steam era was finishing on New Zealand Railways with the aim to rescue some of the last remaining steam locos for eventual use back on the main line. This has necessitated establishing a comprehensive depot and workshop at Paekakariki on the Kapiti Coast 40Km north of Wellington. Besides steam and vintage diesel locos the collection now comprises a large fleet of heritage carriages.
