Thorndon Creative and Historic Cottages Walk

Walk between the Randell Writers' Cottage, the Lilburn House and the garden at the Rita Angus Cottage.

Walk between the Randell Cottage (14 St Mary Street), the Lilburn House (22 Ascot St) and the garden at the Rita Angus Cottage (194a Sydney Street West).

All of these will be holding open days (separately listed). Pick up a map at any of the three cottages to guide your walk through a charming and historic part of Thorndon.

Health & Safety

Although the walk is technically suitable for wheelchairs, the walk between the Lilburn House and the Rita Angus Cottage (down Ascot St) is quite steep.

The walk may be cancelled in bad weather (and this will be announced on the relevant websites before midday). Other Open Day activities at the Lilburn House will continue as planned, and a limited programme will be provided at the Randell Cottage.

Lilburn Residence Trust

The Lilburn Residence Trust Incorporated owns and manages the Lilburn House, 22 Ascot St, Thorndon, as a residency for composers (normally appointed annually in conjunction with the New Zealand School of Music). The house itself is a Category 1 Heritage listed building, partly because of its historical importance musically, and because it is a fine example of modernist domestic architecture.

Our Trust exists to manage and conserve the cultural heritage values of the Rita Angus cottage and garden.

Randell Cottage Writers Trust

Our Trust cares for Randell Cottage as a listed heritage building dating from 1867. We host alternate writers each year from New Zealand and France for six months each. They receive rent-free accommodation, a stipend for living costs and pastoral support to achieve their literary projects. The Friends of Randell Cottage support the Trust and welcome you to the Open Day. We work in close collaboration with the Embassy of France in Wellington.
