Wellington as an 'experimental society' during the 1840s

https://natlib.govt.nz/records/22867534

A discussion of 'The Origins of an Experimental Society – New Zealand 1769 – 1860' by Erik Olssen, Auckland University Press, 2025.

Associate Professors Annabel Cooper and Malcolm McKinnon will reflect on Professor Olssen’s work and its enduring significance.

Professor Olssen died in July at the age of 84, and this event will be a tribute to his last book and a lifetime of research into New Zealand history.

Discussion will focus on radical thinking that shaped early Wellington and the enduring influence ideas of early settlers have had for New Zealand identity. Founded in 1841 and at 88 The Terrace since the 1870s, Wellington Club is a significant venue for this discussion.
